課程概述 |
This course focuses on how a study in social sciences accomplishes its rigorous reasoning using model, theory and framework. Normally a study starts with some central (theoretical) questions, followed by appropriate research strategy or approach. The study could be exploratory to find some crucial issues and propose causal relationships between key factors or it could be confirmatory to test hypotheses. The study could also be descriptive, normative or prescriptive, emphasizing objectivity, causality and feasibility, respectively. What constitutes a real challenge is that a researcher should consolidate all these considerations into three levels of academic work: the formal model level, the theory level, and the framework level. First, formal models make explicit assumptions about the elements and structure of a particular situation and use the logical tools of a theory to derive predictions about the likely outcomes of a particular set of parameters and to build specific models. Secondly, theorists are concerned with puzzles that apply to general classes of models rather than specific models, and a theory provides a metatheoretical language for formulating, postulating, predicting, evaluating, and changing various models of that theory. Finally, theorists identify the broad working parts and their posited relationships used in an entire approach to a set of questions, and frameworks help to organize diagnostic and prescriptive inquiry. |
課程目標 |
This seminar course is mainly designed for graduate students who are interested in doing rigorous social sciences study and focuses on two main themes: (1) the essence of reasoning and (2) model, theory and framework. |
課程要求 |
Grading will be based on individual assignment performance (40%), group assignment performance (40%) and class participation (20%). |
